I have always been a bit of a summer girl. I may complain about the humidity and swat at mosquitoes, but really, summer is my favorite season (just make sure I have air conditioning and bug spray). This weekend is the unofficial start of summer and to me that is all I need to get into full summer mode. Here are the things I love the most about summer:
We live in one heck of a land-locked state. At least the northern part of our start butts up to a Great Lake, but no such luck for Southern Indiana. But that doesn’t mean we are beach free! About 10 minutes from our home is the largest lake in Indiana—Lake Monroe. It’s giant reservoir with quite a few very nice swimming beaches. Every year, we buy an annual pass to the Indiana State Parks so heading to the beach is pretty much free entertainment for us. We pack a picnic, a book and soak up the sun.
I hate that, in the middle of winter, I feel like my day is over by the time I get home from work. But in the summer, my day feels so long. So much daylight to do all the things I want to do. Because I feel like I have so much “day” left, I accomplish more and therefore feel better about myself. Plus, I actually like going to bed when it is a little bit light out (which is entirely possible when you have a 9:30 p.m. bedtime).
I refuse to buy watermelon out of season. If you’ve ever had an Indiana watermelon, you’d understand why. They are sweet, crisp and downright perfect. Nothing shipped in from across the globe should even be considered the same fruit. I cannot wait until watermelons show up at the farmer’s market!
Cookouts with family
My sister and her family moved back to Indiana last summer after a decade spent on the West Coast. With all three of my siblings back in the same state, we had a lot of really awesome and fun family filled summer cookouts. Lots of kids running around, lounging in the pool, and my Dad’s world-famous (and strong) strawberry margaritas. Those were some of my favorite weekends of last summer and I can’t wait to repeat them this summer.
What are you looking forward to this summer?
