It is perfect for dipping all your favorite snacks, like crispy tortilla chips or chewy soft pretzels. It’s a staple at gatherings, game nights, or whenever you crave a comforting treat.

What kind of beer should I use?

We recommend lighter beers for beer cheese dip. While the recipe calls for a lager beer, you could also try a pilsner, wheat beer, or pale ale. We recommend saving dark beers like IPAs or stouts for drinking instead!

To make this dip, you’ll need:

  • Unsalted butter
  • All-purpose flour
  • Beer
  • Whole milk
  • Dijon mustard
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Smoked paprika
  • Shredded cheddar cheese

Make this dip your own by switching up the cheeses. Try replacing some of the cheddar with pepper jack, gruyere, or gouda cheese. We do recommend using at least 50% cheddar cheese to ensure that the dip keeps the right consistency.

Beer Cheese Dip Recipe

This quick and easy beer cheese dip is perfect for parties or game day snacks. With just a few simple ingredients, you can have a delicious and creamy dip in just 15 minutes!

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup beer (we used a lager)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 
  • 2 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Add the butter to a medium saucepan and heat over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour, stirring constantly for 1 minute.
  2. Whisk in the milk, beer, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, until thickened.
  3. Add about half the cheese and stir until melted. Add the remaining cheese and stir constantly until fully melted and smooth.
  4. Serve with soft pretzels, chips, and/or veggies!

Notes

  • If you'd like to make this without alcohol, sparkling apple cider works great in place of beer. The cheese dip is still delicious, but it does turn out sweeter than if using beer.
  • We recommend a lighter beer like lagers for this recipe. We used a Mexican lager and it was great! You want to avoid dark or strong beers like IPAs, stouts, etc.
  • You can customize this recipe by using different cheeses like cheddar jack blends, pepperjack, etc. But we recommend using at least 50% cheddar cheese to keep it the right consistency!
  • This dip thickens as it cools, so it’s best to keep it warm when serving. We recommend a small crockpot or keeping it on low on the stove while guests are digging in.
