What kind of juicer should I use?

If you're just starting out with juicing, the first thing you'll need is...well...a juicer! There are two main kinds of juicers out there-centrifugal (AKA: fast) and masticating (AKA: slow or cold-press) juicers.

The typical juicer you grab from the big box store is probably a centrifugal juicer. The disadvantages of these kind of juicers are pretty numerous-they aren't very efficient at extracting juice, they don't do well juicing leafy greens, they are loud as all get out, and some of these juicers get hot enough that they actually break down of the nutrients in the juice.

However, if you really want to get into juicing and get the most flavor and nutrients out of your fruits and veggies, a slow juicer is the way to go. The "slow" is a bit of a misnomer, because while slower than a centrifugal juicer, slow juicers are still very fast. They are quiet, easy-to-clean, and really give you best quality juice. The drawback? They aren't cheap. But if you plan on juicing regularly, it'll be money well spent.

Here are the two centrifugal/slow juicers I recommend as of 2026:

My juicer in these photos is no longer available, but I've been able to find some other really good options out there. Here are my two faves:

  • Budget-friendly (but still very, very good): Ninja NeverClog Juicer - This is a good quality starter slow juicer, but it does require you to pre cut produce into smaller chunks.
  • Splurge: NAMA J2 Cold Press Juicer - This bad boy is self-feeding, so it moves very fast. And it has a HUGE hopper so you don't have to spend time chopping most fruits and veggies into smaller pieces.

What are some good starter juice recipes?

When I first started juicing, I felt really intimidated by all the crazy combos out there-I mean just in the grocery store alone, you see some bottles of juice with a million different ingredients. 2 ½ strawberries here, ⅔ of a mango there, 27 blueberries. Who counts blueberries!?!

I thought I'd pull together eight of my favorite simple juice recipes to get you started. These juice recipes all use easy-to-find fruits and veggies, and most of the juices have less than three ingredients. They are all sweetened naturally with fruit, so you know they taste great! These are a great way to get your feet wet with juicing. Let's get started!

Green Goddess Juice

If you're looking to start adding green juice to your diet, this is a great place to start. Cucumbers and celery are both packed with water, making them excellent candidates for juicing. And green apple adds tons of sweetness and fruity flavor to the juice. This juice is super refreshing and hydrating-perfect for summer!

Ginger Zinger Juice

Like the spicy kick of ginger? Well then this recipe is for you. The sweetness of carrots and apples are a great balance to the heat of ginger.

Tropi-Kale Juice

Get your nutrients from dark, leafy greens all while drinking juice that tastes like the tropics!

Antioxidant Blast Juice

The earthiness of beets is balanced out by sweet and fruity berries in this brightly purple juice. If regular purple beets are a bit too strong of a flavor for your tastes, try golden beets, which are sweeter and more mild in flavor.

Immune Booster Juice

Feeling under the weather? Send a power boost to your immune system with the germ-fighting combo of lemon, orange, and ginger.

Not So Sour Apple Juice

This juice combines two different types of apples to create a fun and healthy twist on traditionally apple juice. This is one of the juice recipes that is not recommended for centrifugal juicers, which will not be able to properly juice spinach leaves.

Kale Kickstart Juice

Start your day off right with this fruity juice packed fruits and veggies! This is a great starter green juice for people who are a little scared to drink something so...herbacious.

Cucumber Cooler Juice

Bright and fruity, this juice shows off how awesome melons are in fruit and vegetable juices. For a fun, refreshing twist, add in a leaf or two of fresh mint.

  1. Cassie, please what brand of Huron juicer would you recommend I buy for business purposes. I want a durable one that is good for commercial purposes. Thanks . Benny

    1. Hi Benny: Sorry, I can't be of any help here. I only juice at home. I'd recommend contacting a Hurom directly to see if they have any suggestions. Thanks!

  2. I can’t spend additional money for a slow juicer. I’d find it helpful to see which recipes or items can’t be used in a centrifugal juicer.
How to use a lemon perhaps in the carrot/ginger juice.
    What about melon?
    Thanks

  3. Really appreciate your hard work. It will be great if you provide a video for these recipes. Hope you will make video in future. Thanks

  4. 5 stars
Hey Cassie, thanks for these. I was bored of drinking the same juice recipes. Just tried the Ginger Zinger! Loved it.

  5. I tried two of these today:

    Green Goddess
    Ginger Zinger

    Green Goddess:

Light taste. The celery and cucumber seem foremost in this juice. Not a favorite of mine.

Ginger Zinger: Much better than Green Goddess in my son's and my opinion. Sweet with a bit of tartness. Very worth making again.

    1. You should be able to, with some adjustments - you'll probably need to add liquid, and cut back on the amount of fruits and veggies so that the blender isn't too full.

  6. Love to try your recipes. Basically the fruit recipes. I love to try different fruit recipes that can rejuvenate the health and benefits to get more energy.

  7. I just bought a juicer and are excited to try some of these combos unfortunate for me celery is very hard to find in the Yucatan pennisula.

  8. Hi, thank you for this great recipes. Could you please explain again how do you Juice banana? I have Kenwood slow juicer and it has only one function plus the reverse button.. I’m not sure I know what I’m doing.

    Thank you!

    1. I've never juiced with your brand of juicer, but I imagine if you just have one function, it should be fine to run it through just like you do any other fruit or veggie. 🙂 Cut it into spears that are the size of your chute, then run them through just like normal.

  9. My wife and I first tried the antioxidant blast. It tasted great, but then very quickly realized we had made a mistake, being that she and I are both very new to juicing. Our systems were not prepared for the effects of the beet juice, we found literature shortly after consuming two entire beets each that beginners should start with a quarter of a beet per week due to its natural let's just say cleansing ability. Neither wife nor I made it to work that morning.

  10. I always want to try juicing but it looks like a lot of calories for me. I really need to restrict high glycemic foods and I afraid I would not only gain weight but would raise blood sugar/a1c levels.
Has anyone had issues with weight gain or blood sugar from juicing?

    1. No... I actually lose weight and my eyesight clears. My hunger subsides and my energy level balances. I don't check my sugar levels but I can tell where they stand by how I feel. I don't recommend downing juice, but small portions can't hurt. I do know that if you introduce anything into your regimen, keep a close eye on yourself. For me, if I feel anything off, water goes down my hatch like a fish.
