🔁 Variations & Substitutions

  • Skip the banana: Leave out the banana and add in canned pears, more applesauce, or an avocado half. I have a whole bunch of smoothies without banana that you can checkout for more tips on how to de-banana any smoothie recipe.
  • Make it vegan/dairy-free: Sub in dairy-free yogurt. Try my coconut milk yogurt recipe.
  • Boost the nutrition: Add in protein powder, more spinach, collagen, chia seeds, flax meal-go wild!
  • Add in whole apples: My recipe leaves out whole apples just because they can be rough on some blenders, but if you have a powerful blender, feel free to toss in some sliced apples (keep on the peels for added fiber).

Spinach and apple are packed with fiber, protein, and tons of vitamins and minerals to fuel your day. Spinach has tons of vitamin K, vitamin A, iron, and Vitamin C.

Is it okay to put raw spinach in a smoothie?

Absolutely! Raw spinach blends almost seamlessly into smoothies and has a mild enough flavor to be covered up in most fruit smoothies. Stick with baby spinach for the best blending.

  1. APPLICIOUS!

This was the first "Wholefully" smoothie my teens decided to make. They added vanilla protein powder and extra spinach for increased nutritional value. Then they garnished the top with crushed graham crackers (pie crust) and sprinkled cinnamon. It was APPLaudingly delicious!!

Next time, they are going to try substituting the applesauce with fresh Granny Smith Apples.

    1. Yum! We're so glad you and your teens are enjoying the recipe and having fun making it your own. Thanks for taking the time to tell us about it, Deb!

  2. I have a home daycare and the children always ask for a ''green'' smoothie, which is spinach, banana, mango, pineapple and a little water. They love it and I do too.

  3. Are you using a regular blender? And it's handling the ice ok? I was wondering because I don't have a VitaMix or Blend Tec, just a blender by Cuisnart and a Juicer by the Juiceman.

    1. I am using a regular KitchenAid blender. I can't afford those fancy things! 😛 And yes, it does ice just fine.

  4. So glad I found this! You just combined two of my FAVORITE things. Cassie, you're my new hero. And your hair and glasses are super cute. Just thought I should mention since it's my first time here. x

    1. Hmmm, you could skip the bananas all together and just add a little bit of sweetener (like honey or maple syrup). The banana is really there just to sweeten the smoothie.

  5. Aaah, so festive! I thought about doing a pumpkin green smoothie the other day but decided that the color scheme would just be too awful 🙂

  6. I usually think green smoothies look so gross, but yours looks delicious! I think I just associate the green with green apples. Totally a mind game. 🙂

  7. The photos are gorgeous as usual. I do green smoothies pretty much every day, yep yep! My fave is almond milk/spinach/vanilla protein powder/1 T almond butter. I'm crushing on this apple pie idea, tho, yum! Glad you're feeling better, too. 🙂

  8. Perfect timing! I'm sitting here feeling miserable and full of cold! I'll have to set myself up with one of these for tomorrow morning! My strategy for colds is lots of Vit C, healthy food, pills when I need them and as much sleep as I can get.
