[box] I thought a nice way to send 2011 packing would be to go in depth and review how I did with each of the 11 goals that I set around this time last year. For the next two weeks or so, you’ll see one of these a day. Some I totally rocked, some, not so much. I’ll end it all by sharing with you my goals for 2012. [/box]
Goal #11: Donate my time to more volunteer organizations.
Did I achieve it?
I wrote this goal with certain tasks in mind. We’d volunteer at a soup kitchen or we’d help built a Habitat for Humanity house. Then, the year started to pass and we just never did any of those things. I started to get frustrated that we’d never just go and do it. Thankfully, someone shared with me a website where you could volunteer for organizations using digital skills (website design, social media, etc.) and a big, giant lightbulb went on over my head—why not use the skills I already have to benefit organizations? So I did!
So far this year, I’ve donated quite a bit of my time to helping redesign the website for our local children’s museum. I’m also working with them to develop a social media strategy and help maintain their social media channels. Similarly, I have a meeting set up in the new year with our local chapter of Habitat for Humanity to start working on their social media strategy. I also donated a small amount of time helping a local food pantry that focuses on whole foods (awesome, right?) with their website. Of note, Babyface also jumped on this train and is going to work with Habitat using his photography skills.
I definitely wanted to accomplish more than this in regards to volunteerism this year, but I’m excited that I’ve found a way to benefit organizations I believe in with the skills I already have. And I’m excited to take this into the new year (and hopefully the rest of my life).
