Cassie here. We’re quickly closing in on the official start of the Super Summer challenge. Coach Krissie is here to walk you through a fun little exercise that’ll help you figure out what tasks should you should be focusing on to help make your summer a little more super. Alright, friends. Let’s talk about goals.

It is easy to look at the printables and think, “Cassie knows what she’s talking about! I’ll just go with her goals!” But you aren’t Cassie. You aren’t me. In order to get the most out of this challenge, your goals need to reflect who you are and what you want to accomplish to be a better version of you.

Sometimes, though, those goals are hard to figure out.

So here’s what I want you to do. Close your eyes and think about who you want to be in 5 years. Give yourself 5 minutes and walk through your day. Start in the morning and live your entire day. What do you do for a living? What is your house like? What do you eat? What do you see in the mirror? What are you wearing? Do you exercise? What do you no longer worry about? What do you do?

And then write. Jot down as much detail as you want to remember who you want to be. This is just for you, so it may be bullet points or an essay or an art project.

Notice the gaps between the person you are and the person you want to be. There is where you goals lie.

Does the future you teach yoga? Then you may need to start putting effort and focus into your yoga practice.

Is your future closet stocked full of clothes in a smaller size? Then maybe you want to think about tasks that’ll point to weight loss.

Is the future you peaceful and calm? Then you may want to incorporate relaxation exercises into your day.

Does the future you no longer have any debt? Then maybe you should think of some ways to up your credit card payment.

Are you at your dream job in the future? Then you might want to figure out how to change or alter your career path.

Does the future you run marathons? Then maybe you want to start a running program.

Once you have a few areas outlined, think about first steps. You don’t have to say that you are going to wake up tomorrow and run 10 miles or cut a check for double your credit card payment each month. Instead, what is the first step to financial freedom for you? Your first step may be $25 to start an emergency fund. It may be taking lunch to work. (That is going to be one of my body and mind goals, by the way.) Think in terms of baby steps, and keep them attainable. Let them build throughout the different point levels. Put manageable (but meaningful) steps in the 10 points category build to 500 points for the really challenging. Make yourself work, but set yourself up for success.

Let’s say that the future you is writing a book. To get there, you don’t have to say you’re going to write a thousand words a day during this challenge. You can give yourself credit (and points!) for exploratory efforts, too. You can read a book about writing (10 points). You can try out different writing platforms (50 points). And then maybe, if you do write 1,000 words in a day, give yourself the big kahuna for completing such a challenging task (500 points).

I want you to use the you-in-the-future activity to really focus your goals. If the future you isn’t a runner, you may not want to put running as a goal. If the future you appreciates minimalism, you may not want to buy a lot of new books. Keep your goals focused on what you want for yourself. Try to release the expectations of other people or the “shoulds” that we all tend to put on ourselves. Focus your goals on becoming a better and more authentic version of yourself.

The other thing I want you to keep in mind is having an attitude of curiosity around this challenge. It can be easy to get caught up in the “musts” and the “shoulds.” But I’m going to ask you to approach the challenge with an attitude of “what if?”. Instead of thinking that you must go complaint-free for a day, try to think about “I wonder what would happen if I did?” Instead of feeling like I must style my hair every day, I wonder how taking the time to do so will impact how I feel about myself throughout the day. And then, we pay attention to the outcome. And we repeat if it works and mark it out if it flops.

I want to challenge you to find a balance of acknowledging the big and the small. I want to challenge you to create a set of goals that make you feel good and goals that make you feel a smidge uncomfortable. Try things on for size. Challenge yourself. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone, but try to detach yourself from the outcome. Be prepared to suck at some things. Give yourself the points for the effort.

    This was such a great exercise! I always have these plans for the future, but to really sit down and write down what I want out of my life in the near future AND especially connect goals to them really worked for me. Thanks for this!

    Thanks for such great suggestions. It’s hard to set goals and keep them for me but I think these tips will help me make a good start at it!
