My long runs are finally getting to the point where they are feeling like long runs. Yesterday, I ran 5 miles. Which I know in the grand scheme of the sport of running is nothing, but to me, it is a triumph!
I’ve never ran 5 miles before. And the most triumphant part was that it wasn’t hard. At all. I felt good for all 5 miles. All pistons were firing. The sun was shining, the temperature was good and I basically rocked it.
I really need to get a new windbreaker. This one fit me about 50 pounds ago and can get a little annoying during a run. But the color is awesome for not getting clipped by SUVs (which I almost did during my last long run).
Even though it snowed 3 inches on Saturday and there was still a bit of ice from icepocalypse, I was able to run without worrying about my footing because of these:
They are amazing! If you are running (or walking) outside in the winter, go buy yourself some. The best part isn’t even the physical stability (which is great). The best part is the peace of mind! No need to worry about where I step or where I run. My mind can get stuck in running land instead of worrying about the ice-covered sidewalk. Highly recommended!
I’m starting to work on pre-, during and post-run fuel. I definitely don’t want to leave anything to chance on race day. About an hour before my run, I had a whole wheat English muffin with Earth Balance, peanut butter and banana slices. Plus a cup of half-caf coffee. I am SOLD on having caffeine before long runs. Every time I have, I’ve had plenty of energy.
This all felt good, but I think I might try other nut butters. I like peanut butter and all, I just don’t love it (I know, I’m weird).
During my run I sipped on about a half quart of my homemade sports drink. It felt good! I might put it in my CamelBak for the rest of my long runs.
I had a nice long stretching session after my run. Puppyface helped.
And then, I had some recovery chocolate milk. Which tasted awesome, but I think I might wait a little longer before having it next time. Maybe chocolate milk is a better post-shower fuel. Stick to sports drink right afterward.
I’m starting to get excited about training. I really feel like I’m progressing each and every time I hit the road and that makes me so proud!
