Happy Lovey Dovey Heart Day!

Share this post:

Hi, friends! Happy, happy Valentine’s Day!

I’ve always been a big Valentine’s Day fan. I’m up for any (extra) excuse to celebrate all the love in my life. That being said, Babyface and I are always pretty low-key on Valentine’s Day. We are pretty obnoxiously, sickeningly lovey-dovey on a day-to-day basis, so February 14th isn’t really different from, well February 13th.

Actually, even February 13th is more important to us because it was the date Mr. Johnston found his way onto my Livejournal blog and left a comment for the first time. We were both goners from pretty much Day One. We were engaged four months later. He immigrated to the U.S. seven months after that, and we were married at city hall a month after that. And, as they, say, the rest is history.

Our Valentine’s Day present to each other is, uh, pretty utilitarian. We’ve been saving up our pennies for months now to buy a fence for the garden, and we finally went up and bought all the supplies earlier in the week. Romantic? Maybe not to you. But we’ll be spending countless hours together tending that garden over the next few months, and a fence to protect our joint handiwork from the various varmints that like to destroy it seems pretty fitting (and maybe a little bit of a metaphor for how to build and keep a strong marriage).

Plus, it’ll let us grow our own flowers. Which, I guarantee, Babyface will pick one, tuck it into my hair, hand me a gin and tonic one summer evening, and then tell me to go sit out on the porch while he makes dinner. Because that’s the kind of thing he likes to do. Because he’s simply incredible.

And now, I’m totally jonesin’ for summer.

Even though there aren’t any chocolates or flowers or jewelry today, we are going to have a little bit of fun to celebrate pink fluffy heart day. We’re headed out to do the February installment of our 12 Months of Date Nights. We’re both really excited about it because it’s going to be super fun and totally, completely free (well, except for the gas to get there). We like free! I’ll probably share our fun date with you guys next week sometime.

But for now, I hope you have an absolutely lovely day. And don’t forget, it’s just important to show your feelings for your loved ones tomorrow as it is today. Love freely, love often. <3 <3 <3

Gush about your loved ones! Tell me who do you love? Why do you love them? What makes them so incredible?

    Hi Cassie,

I just came across this post. I could almost write a life-time movie about my husband and me. Our paths crossed briefly one night, but his kind face and smile stayed with me. A year later our paths crossed again in the same way (he volunteers every year for the Chincoteague Fireman’s Carnival and Pony Swim working the ferris wheel) when his gaze focused on me I saw recognition and his face lit up. I managed to say hello as I was leaving and told him I’d see him again next year. The following summer, again, he was at the ferris wheel and so we spoke. The more we spoke the more we knew something brought us together. We spoke on the phone for several weeks and even while I was out of the country. He met me at the airport with flowers when I returned to the states. The first time he came to my house my daughter said, he’s from the ferris wheel. All of this is just the tip of the iceburg. We’ve been together for over 7 years. We wake up and smile at each other. The kids love him and he feels blessed to have all of us in his life. His family has accepted and treated me and my children like their own. He is truly a gift..I only wish my mom had gotten the chance to meet him because one of the last things she said to me is that she wanted me to be happy.

My fiancé Lee came into my life during such a dark time and completely changed it for the better. He’s taught me real love, acceptance and respect. I have no idea where I would be without his support!

  3. I read this outloud to my boyfriend because I told him it reminded me of our relationship. I literally started to tear up while reading it to him – the part about “because that’s the kind of thing he likes to do”. Love this post and the sentiment.
