About face : All about my about my skincare routine

I talk about a lot of (what I think are) interesting things here. But out of all the things I’ve written about, I think I get the most e-mails about something I haven’t written about: skin care. Who knew that posting photos of your face on the internet would garner so many questions?!

I get a lot of questions about how I get my glow. About what I do to feel confident without makeup. About how I have such a clear complexion.

First and foremost, I refer you to number 26 on my 50 things I’ve learned in 50 pounds list. Glowing is a state of mind, not a physical attribute.

That being said, let’s talk about practical advice. My secrets are pretty much not secret at all. My secrets are what my entire blog is about.

1. Eat real food.

Essential fats like those found in avocados, olive oil and fish helps balance out dry skin and keep it dewy. Antioxidant rich foods like blackberries, blueberries and pomegranates help block free-radicals from damaging cell walls . Selenium rich foods like whole grains help to block the skin cells from sun damage. What you put in your body is more important than what you put on your skin.

2. Drink plenty of water.

Healthy cells = healthy skin. Water keeps cells hydrated and helps nutrients flow in and toxins flow out. Worried about wrinkles? Hydrated skin is softer, retains its elasticity better and is more supple than dehydrated skin.

3. Sweat every now and again.

Exercise helps stimulate circulation. And a little bit of activity makes for the best environment for your body to produce collagen, which helps smooth out wrinkles. Have troubles with acne? Exercise reduces testosterone production, which is often caused by stress and a common culprit for skin breakouts.

4. Don’t stress out.

Easier said than done, I know. But stress does the opposite of #5 up there. Stress accelerates the adrenal glands and pushes the body to produce more male-hormones, which are break-out inducing. Stress also causes increased cortisol productions, which increases oil production and more oil means more breakouts.

And that’s it. Seriously. I don’t wash my face. I don’t moisturize. I don’t use toner or astringent. And I rarely wear makeup.

You may push away what I have to say aside thinking that my genes must give me naturally good skin, but that isn’t the case. I saw a distinct shift in my complexion when I began eating real food, exercising and staying hydrated. I used to break out constantly and have a very uneven skintone. Slowly, as my body chemistry shifted to appreciate the healthy lifestyle, so did my skin. The final straw was when I made the decision to stop wearing makeup on a regular basis. My skin improved dramatically!

This all being said. I’m still a girl. I wear makeup sometimes for fun.

And sometimes I’ve even been known to put on a fun, tingly clay mask.

My skin in far from perfect. Whatever perfect is. I have hormones that change things up. My skin gets dry during the winter. And I have a ton of freckles (which I actually love, but lots of people don’t). But good food, lots of water, some sweating and a calm mind has made me happy with my skin. And that is something I would have never said a few years ago.

Yay freckles! I love my freckles too! 🙂

These are great tips. I always find that when I don’t drink enough water, you can definitely tell by my skin.

Amen! I noticed the exact same thing a few months ago when I upped the water and vegetables, started exercising, cut back on the processed foods, and chilled the heck out. I also stopped washing my face and wearing makeup and I have the best skin since I was 10! No one believes me that I do nothing and look much better than with my involved, multi-product routine. How the beauty companies do brainwash us.
