My half marathon is in 44 days! That is sneaking up fast and the number of long runs I have left is quickly dwindling. And one of the first rules of training is that you never wear something on race that you haven’t trained with before. With this logic, it is time for me to start thinking about my race day attire.
I know a lot of people would say to wear what has been working for me, but I think the day of my half is going to be a big and important milestone in my life and, just like I would for any other “big day” a new(er) outfit will make me feel special!
The race I’m in is one of the largest half marathons in the country. Clocking in at nearly 40,000 participants, it is not easy for spectators to spot runners. Of course, I want to be comfortable, but I also want to stand out a little bit.
Last year, when running the 5K that went along with the half, I told my parents to look for me in “super hot pink,” thinking there wouldn’t be a lot of people wearing something so bright. Turn out, I was way off! They said it seemed like pretty much everyone was in hot pink or bright green (which, incidentally, was the color my sister was wearing). We were able to spot each other, but I’d like to make it easier if possible.
What colors do you think won’t be as popular? I figure stay away from pink, green, white, and black. I was thinking maybe a bright school bus yellow. Although there is a reason that color is unpopular, it looks terrible with a lot of skin tones (including mine).
I was also thinking about wearing kelly green. I figure there will be a lot of lime green, but maybe not as much true green? I dunno. Maybe with 40,000 people, this mission is totally pointless.
A lot of people write their names on their shirts and I’m contemplating it. I’ve never ran a race long enough where people do that, but I am totally not ashamed to solicit cheers from the crowd through my apparel. Hey, if some stranger shouting my name at mile 11 gets me through, I’m fine with that.
Also, I want to totally have fun with this race, so I’m planning on wearing checked knee highs (just as long as running in them is comfortable). I am running the Indianapolis 500 Festival Mini Marathon. Indianapolis 500! Fast cars! Checkered flags! Checkered socks? Get it?
I’m also thinking of buying a new Bondi Band just for the race! I love all of these.
Please tell me I’m not the only one that starts planning out race outfits 6 weeks ahead of time? Ha!
